Early life and education

Avul Pakir Zainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was born on 15 October 1931 on Pamban Island, a pilgrimage center in Rameswaram, into a Tamil Muslim family within the present-day Madras state. His father Jainulabdeen was the owner of a ship and his mother Ashiyamma, a Imam of an area mosque, was a housewife. His father owned a ferry that carried Hindu pilgrims between Rameswaram and also the now deserted Dhanushkodi. Kalam was the youngest of 4 brothers and a sister in his family. Their ancestors were wealthy merchants and zamindars with many estates and big tracts of land. His business included trade groceries between the mainland and thus the island and from country, further as fermenting pilgrims between the mainland and Pamban. As a result, the family acquired the title of "Mara Kalam Iyakiver" (wooden boat propeller), Which became smaller over the years as "Marquier". With the Pamban Bridge opening on the mainland in 1914, businesses failed and also the family's fortune and property were lost over time, additionally to the ancestral home. • The Government of India also conferred India's highest civilian award ' Bharat Ratna ' to Kalam Saheb within the year 1997 for his unprecedented contribution in research and development of technology in India.

• He is a distinguished scientist from India, who has received honorary doctorate from 30 universities and institutes.
