Early life and education

Avul Pakir Zainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was born on 15 October 1931 on Pamban Island, a pilgrimage center in Rameswaram, into a Tamil Muslim family within the present-day Madras state. His father Jainulabdeen was the owner of a ship and his mother Ashiyamma, a Imam of an area mosque, was a housewife. His father owned a ferry that carried Hindu pilgrims between Rameswaram and also the now deserted Dhanushkodi. Kalam was the youngest of 4 brothers and a sister in his family. Their ancestors were wealthy merchants and zamindars with many estates and big tracts of land. His business included trade groceries between the mainland and thus the island and from country, further as fermenting pilgrims between the mainland and Pamban. As a result, the family acquired the title of "Mara Kalam Iyakiver" (wooden boat propeller), Which became smaller over the years as "Marquier".
